And certified auto professionals can get the respect and recognition they’ve worked so hard to earn.

What does ASE mean and why should I care if it’s an ASE Technician?

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence ASE, is short for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Since 1972 they are an independent non-profit organization has worked to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals. The process to become ASE Certified is not easy. In order to attain ASE Certification, technicians must complete a minimum of 2 years of qualified work experience and pass a challenging test for each certification. The tests are challenging. Only two out of every three test takers pass on their first attempt. To ensure technician’s are up-to-date on current systems and technologies, ASE Certified Technicians are required to prove their technician knowledge by retesting every 5 years to keep their certifications current.

Additionally, ASE exists to protect the automotive service customer, shop owners and service professionals. They test and certify automotive service professionals so that the shops like Orozco’s Auto Service and and their customers can better gauge a technician’s level of expertise before contracting the technician’s services. They certify the service individual so they can offer tangible proof of their technical knowledge.

Head Gasket Repair Tips You Can’t Live Without

Head Gasket Repair

Fullerton Head Gasket Repair

Head gasket repair can be a complicated task due to the complexity of today’s high tech vehicles and it’s most likely the last thing on many Fullerton driver’s minds. But when it needs to be repaired, you’ll know with a little help from Orozco’s Auto Service of Fullerton. If you keep having to topping off your coolant, or there’s a blue or white smoke coming from your exhaust or when you top off your oil you notice a frothy white substance under the cap then you may have an issue with your head gasket. If a blown head gasket is the problem it’s not exactly the easiest of fixes. More than likely your vehicle may be in the shop for a few days.

In addition to a slew of electronics, hoses, belts batteries, today’s internal engines rely on liquids and gases to function: air-and-fuel, engine coolant and engine oil to be more specific. Engines are designed to keep these liquids and gases from mixing so they can perform their specific functions. And the head gasket is designed just for that task. It’s mounted between the engine block and the cylinder head. This is where the intake, exhaust and valves are also located. The head gasket is a thin seal that prevents liquids and gases from escaping into adjacent cylinders and the surrounding oil and coolant galleries. As previously mentioned the two elements this is designed to keep separate are coolant and engine oil. Just like that old saying oil and water don’t mix! At Orozco’s Auto Service of Fullerton we have the expertise to keep that oil and coolant separate and to repair that head gasket no matter what you drive.

Still I’m sure you still may be scratching your head wondering “what is a head gasket” so let up help you out.

Engine coolant surrounds each cylinder in order to maintain a stable operating temperature; it also needs to flow into the cylinder heads to cool the combustion chamber, valve and spark plugs. The engine oil performs three important functions: lubrication, cooling and hydraulics. The oil pump sends pressurized oil throughout the engine to lubricate bearings, bushings, journals and timing chains. It also drives hydraulic actuators, such as variable valve timing. As we mentioned before, it’s a complicated repair.

Some of the more common signs that you may notice when there’s a blown head gasket areas follows:

Misfire on startup, accompanied by a puff of white exhaust

An external oil or coolant leak at the seam between the engine block and cylinder head

Blue exhaust smoke could be another indicator

Cylinder misfires are another sign of head gasket failure

Overheating is one of the less-obvious signs of a blown head gasket

Oil-contaminated coolant can form a mayonnaise-like film, which you might find on the radiator cap or in the overflow reservoir

When checking your oil the dipstick can have a dirty frothy consistency

If any of these signs are ignored it can lead to complete engine failure. The engine can over heat resulting in a seized engine, a warped or cracked head or even a blown piston rings, meaning you would need a complete rebuild for your engine. If you are worried you may have a blown or leaking head gasket Orozco’s Auto Service is your answer.
