Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. is an Italian car manufacturer founded on June 24, 1910, in Milan, Italy, and has been involved in motorsports since 1911. Originally named A.L.F.A., an acronym for “Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili,” which translates to Anonymous Lombard Automobile Factory, the name changed to Alfa Romeo when Neapolitan entrepreneur Nicola Romeo took control of the company in August 1915 and converted the factory to produce military hardware for Italian and Allied war efforts. Nicola Romeo left in 1928, but his name remained. In 1986, it became part of the Fiat group and today is a subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Italy.
Alfa Romeo struggled to return to profitability after World War II and began mass-producing small vehicles rather than the hand-built luxury and sports cars it first specialized in. In 1954, it developed the Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine, a technologically advanced design that remained in production for four decades – until 1994. In the 1960s and 1970s, Alfa Romeo began producing more sports cars again but still struggled to make a profit, leading its then-parent company, Finmeccanica, to sell it to the Fiat Group.
Alfa Romeo has a legacy of success not only from its own motorsports programs but also as both a constructor and an engine supplier in several different categories of motorsports, including Grand Prix, Formula One, touring car series, and rallies. The first purpose-built Alfa Romeo racing car was made in 1913, three years after the company was founded, and Alfa Romeo won the first-ever Grand Prix championship in 1925. Enzo Ferrari founded the Scuderia Ferrari racing team in 1929 as an Alfa Romeo racing team before becoming independent in 1939. Scuderia Ferrari holds the title of most wins of any racing team in the world, although many of these were after separating from Alfa Romeo.
Alfa Romeo has introduced many technological innovations over the years, including the first road car with a double overhead cam engine in 1928, electric fuel injection systems in 1940, mechanical variable valve timing in 1980, and regularly employing advanced technologies on its vehicles such as disc brakes and advanced aerodynamics.
Alfa Romeo also has a legacy of beautiful design, having worked with many famous design houses such as Bertone, Giorgetto Giugiaro / Italdesign, Pininfarina, Zagato, and Centro Stile Alfa Romeo.
Alfa Romeo stopped selling vehicles in the U.S. in 1994 but returned in 2015 with the 4C mid-engined sports coupe. It planned to release the Giulia sports sedan by 2017 and to expand its model lineup in the future.
